Songdo Library

The Light Capsule Library

The Light Capsule Library is envisioned as a contemporary cultural landmark, an architectural vessel for knowledge, reflection, and collective experience. Inspired by the idea of a “knowledge capsule,” the building emerges from the landscape as a sculptural form, integrating architecture, light, and program into a unified spatial narrative.

The 90,000 square foot facility is organized around a central luminous dome, an interior “sanctuary” for reading, contemplation, and intellectual engagement. This core space acts as both a visual anchor and a symbolic heart of the project, where light becomes an active architectural element, shifting throughout the day and seasons.

Project Concept and Story

The project extends beyond the building envelope to create a network of outdoor spaces that enhance the user experience: – Landscaped courtyards for reading, gathering, and informal events – Semi-enclosed garden spaces integrated with interior functions -Outdoor study terraces connected to library zones -Pedestrian pathways that weave through the site and connect to the surrounding context -Open green areas for public use and community programming These exterior spaces blur the boundary between inside and outside, reinforcing the concept of the library as an open, accessible civic environment
